Running programs on Windows startup is a good idea sometimes, but at the same time, it can be really dangerous. That's because a lot of viruses and spyware use this Windows feature for running and for spreading inside the operating system. Using the Windows startup manager can't fix this problem, because it doesn't offer you enough information about startup items and, as such, you won't know which ones are dangerous and which ones are not. Fortunately, there is a 3rd party application that allows you to manage startup items exactly the way you like it. I am talking about Startup Guard.

It's enough reading the program's name to know what the application is about. It's about managing and blocking certain startup items that are considered to be dangerous, thus helping maintain the optimal functioning of the system. It's a Windows application, obviously.

What the user will certainly notice is the graphical interface which clearly shows what programs are running at startup and allows blocking them or allowing them to start with Windows, all with one mouse click. If you are not sure if the file is safe or not, you can automatically check it on the program's website, which features a large file database. Every startup removing operation can be undone, in case the user decides that he has made a mistake and that the file is actually safe to run.

Besides removing startup items, Startup Guard can also create new ones, by configuring any application to run together with Windows. When not used, Startup Guard can run from the system tray, continuously monitoring the startup items and alerting the user in case a new program is trying to add itself to the startup list.

Pros

It can replace the Windows startup manager, offering many more features. Besides that, it allows checking startup items on the web, for making sure they are safe. Furthermore, the program can continuously monitor startup items and can alert the user in case a new program tries to add itself to the startup list.

Cons

The program cannot display if a startup item is safe or not directly in the interface. Startup Guard is a startup monitoring application that allows you to see which files are running together with Windows.
